Why it is the next number
Adding one object moves you one step along the counting words. Those are the same move.
One less
One less means the number before. One less than six is five. You step backwards instead of forwards.
Every number has two neighbours
Six sits between five and seven. Every number does — one below and one above, forever in both directions.
You stop counting from one
To find one more than eight, say nine. Starting again at one would work, and it would waste your time.
