Why you are allowed to
You already know how many are in the first group. Counting them again tells you nothing new.
For 6 + 2
Say six, then seven, eight. Just two more counts instead of eight.
Start with the bigger one
For 2 + 6, start at six anyway. Two counts is less work than six, and the answer is the same.
A mistake to watch for
Do not say six as your first count. Six is where you start. The counting begins at seven.
