Some ways to split five
Four and one. Three and two. Five and none. Each is a true way to break five apart.
The whole stays the same
However you split them, there are still five counters. Moving them between groups does not create or destroy any.
One split, two facts
Three and two shows you 3 + 2 = 5 and also 5 − 3 = 2. The same picture answers both questions.
Why splitting is worth practising
Knowing the ways a number breaks apart is what makes bigger arithmetic quick later on.
