Why the rows are ten long
That is what makes the pattern line up. Every number directly below another is exactly ten more.
Straight down
Moving down one row adds ten. From 23 down to 33. The ones digit never changes.
Straight up
Moving up one row takes ten away. From 33 up to 23. The same move, backwards.
Across is one
Moving one square right adds one. So the chart lets you add ones and tens just by moving your finger.
That makes it a tool
To add ten to a number, do not count. Find it and drop straight down.
