The cup is above the table. The shoes are below it. The words do the pointing for you.
Why they matter
Position words let you describe a picture to somebody who cannot see it, and cannot follow your finger.
They come in pairs
If the cup is above the table, the table is below the cup. One sentence gives you two facts.
Some depend on where you stand
Behind changes meaning if you walk round to the other side. Above and below do not.
