Two steps, bigger numbers

42 + 35. Tens: 4 and 3 make 7 tens. Ones: 2 and 5 make 7 ones.

7 tens and 7 ones is 77.

Split, add, rejoin

Add the tens, add the ones, put them back together. Three easy steps instead of one hard one.

Know roughly first

45 + 32 is a bit more than 70. Having a rough answer means a silly one cannot slip past you.
