A number tells you where to start. Dots tell you how far to go.

Start and hop

See 5, then 3 dots. Start at 5 and hop 3 times.

Why a number and a picture together

The number holds the part you already know. The dots hold the part you still have to count. Each does the job it is best at.

It points at the next step

Later you will keep both parts as numbers and count on in your head. The card is training wheels for exactly that.
