Step 1: Let's Learn

Read it, or press Listen and follow the words.

Sometimes a part is missing. The box shows where it hides.

Count on to find it

For 6 + ? = 9, start at 6 and count up to 9. That is 3 hops.

6 and 3 makes 9.

Whole9

The box is a number you have not found yet

It is not a mystery or a trick. It is a real number that already has a value — your job is to work out which one.

Always put it back

Found 4 for 3 + ? = 7? Put 4 in and read it: 3 + 4 = 7. If it reads true, you are right, and you did not need anyone to tell you.

Step 2: Try It Yourself

The dashed box is the missing part.

Change the known part or the whole. The box works itself out.

4 and 5 makes 9.
