For 7 + 3 + 4, do 7 + 3 first. That makes ten, and ten is easy.
You can add them in any order. Pick the order that is easiest.
Why hunt for ten
Adding to ten is the easiest addition there is. Finding a pair that makes ten turns a three-number problem into a one-step one.
You are allowed to reorder
Because swapping does not change a total, you can add them in whichever order suits you. That permission is what makes the strategy legal.
