Digit is one of the numbers you write, like the 3 and the 4 in 34.
In 34, the 3 means three tens. The 4 means four ones.
Two digits, two jobs
The left digit counts bundles. The right digit counts loose ones. They are not two separate numbers — they are two parts of one.
Why the mat helps
It gives each digit a home. Once tens and ones have their own place, the digits stop being interchangeable marks.
