What the 0 means
In 30 the 0 does not mean nothing. It means no ones.
Counting tens sounds like counting: one ten, two tens, three tens.
The zero is doing a job
In 30 the zero says there are no loose ones. Without it you would write 3, which means something entirely different.
Zero holds the place open
It is not nothing. It is a marker that keeps the 3 in the tens column where it belongs.
