Look what happens
18 + 16. Tens: 2 tens. Ones: 8 and 6 makes 14. That is too many loose ones.
Bundle them
Bundle ten of the 14 ones into a rod. Now 3 tens and 4 ones.
So 18 + 16 = 34.
Why a new ten appears
Ten loose ones cannot stay loose — that is what having only ten digits means. They must be bundled and moved across.
Carrying is just bundling
The little 1 you write is one bundle moving to the tens column. Nothing was invented; it was reorganised.
