Small shapes can be put together to make a bigger shape.

It must fill exactly

No gaps and no overlaps. The pieces must fill the shape exactly.

More than one way

The same hexagon can be made from 6 triangles, 3 rhombuses, or 2 trapezoids.

It has to fit exactly

No gaps and no overlaps. If a piece sticks out or leaves a hole, the shape has not really been made.

Usually more than one way

A hexagon can be built from triangles or from rhombuses. Different pieces, same outline.

Step 2: Try It Yourself

Switch pieces. The outline never changes.

Choose a piece. Count how many it takes to fill the hexagon.

It takes 6 triangles to fill the hexagon.
