A hundred is one thing to count
Once you have hundreds, you can count them: one hundred, two hundred, three hundred.
Three places now
A number can have hundreds, tens, and ones. 342 is 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 2 ones.
Bundling is how our number system grows
Ten ones bundle into one ten. Ten tens bundle into one hundred. Ten hundreds will bundle into one thousand. The same rule repeats forever, each time making a unit ten times bigger. Understanding this one rule is worth more than memorising any list of numbers.
What a hundred looks like
A hundred block is a flat square made of ten rows of ten. You can see the ten tens in it, and you can see the hundred ones. Holding that picture in mind is what stops 100 from being just a shape on a page.
A third column appears
Because hundreds exist, numbers now need a third column. In 342, the 3 sits in the hundreds place and means three hundred-blocks, not three. The digit tells you how many; the position tells you how big each one is.
