The tricky bit
After 199 comes 200. After 499 comes 500. The hundred fills and rolls over.
Why it rolls over
199 is 1 hundred, 9 tens, 9 ones. One more makes ten ones, then ten tens, then a new hundred.
The only hard moment is the rollover
Counting from 341 to 349 is easy — only the last digit moves. The tricky moment is 349 to 350, and the trickier one is 399 to 400. At 399 both the ones and the tens are full, so both bundle up and the hundreds digit moves. Slow down at every 9.
Why nine is the warning sign
A 9 in a column means that column is full. Adding one more makes ten of that unit, which bundles and moves left, leaving a 0 behind. So 199 becomes 200, and 999 becomes 1,000. Seeing a 9 and expecting a change is a habit worth building now.
What comes after 999
After 999 comes 1,000 — one thousand. Ten hundreds have bundled into a new, bigger unit, and a fourth column opens up. The comma is only there to help your eyes; it does not change the value.
