An example
4 rows of 3 gives 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Four addends, all the same.
How to check it
Count the addends. There should be one for each row, and they should all match.
Writing an array as repeated addition
An array with 3 rows of 4 can be written 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 — one 4 for each row. You could also count by columns: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Both sentences describe the same array and both give 12.
The shorter way to write it
Writing 4 + 4 + 4 gets tedious once there are ten rows. Later you will write 3 × 4 instead, which means three groups of four. Multiplication is not a new operation to fear — it is shorthand for the repeated addition you are already doing.
Match the sentence to the picture
When you write the equation, check it against the array. Three rows of four should give three fours, not four threes — even though both total 12. Being precise now makes the difference between multiplication and division clear later.
