7 × 6 is double 7 × 3. That is double 21, which is 42.
7 × 6 is 7 × 5 plus one more 7: 35 and 7 makes 42.
Either road works. Use whichever fact you know better.
7 × 6 is 7 × 3 doubled: 21 doubled is 42. Any 6 fact can be built from the 3 fact you already know. This is the same building-from-known-tables idea as the 4s coming from the 2s.
7 × 6 is also 7 × 5 = 35 plus one more 7, giving 42. Two independent routes to the same answer, which is exactly what you want while a fact is still settling into memory — if the two routes disagree, one of them has a slip in it.
Because 6 is even, every product in the 6 times table is even. So if you calculate 7 × 6 and get 41, you can reject it without checking anything else. Small structural checks like this are cheap and catch real mistakes.
