Area by Multiplying

The squares covering a rectangle form an array: rows and columns.

So you can multiply

A rectangle 5 across and 3 down is 3 rows of 5 squares. That is 3 × 5 = 15.

No more counting one by one

Counting 15 squares works. Multiplying is faster and works for any size.

Why multiplying gives the area

A rectangle covered in squares is an array: rows and columns. A rectangle 4 squares tall and 6 wide has 4 rows of 6 squares, which is 4 × 6 = 24 squares. You are not learning a new formula — you are recognising an array you already know how to count.

The formula and what it hides

People write area = length × width. That is correct, but the formula hides the array underneath it. If you ever forget the formula, draw the rectangle and count rows of squares; you will rebuild it in seconds. A formula you can rederive is one you cannot really lose.

Why the answer is in square units

Multiply 4 centimetres by 6 centimetres and the answer is 24 square centimetres, not 24 centimetres. Each unit of area is a little square one centimetre on each side. The word "square" in the unit is doing real work, and dropping it changes what you have measured.
