Why 0.7 and 0.70 Are Equal

Many people think 0.70 is bigger than 0.7, because 70 is bigger than 7.

Why that reasoning fails

7 tenths and 70 hundredths are different units. The digits alone cannot be compared.

They cover the same squares

7 whole columns is 70 small squares. Same shading, same amount.

They land on the same point

On a number line there is only one place for both, because they are one number.

Why 0.7 and 0.70 are equal

0.7 is seven tenths. 0.70 is seventy hundredths. Cut each of the seven tenths into ten and you get seventy hundredths — the same amount, cut differently. This is equivalent fractions in decimal clothing.

More digits does not mean bigger

With whole numbers, more digits means a bigger number: 70 beats 7. With decimals this fails completely: 0.70 equals 0.7, and 0.7 is bigger than 0.65 despite having fewer digits. Carrying the whole-number habit across is the commonest decimal error there is.

When the extra zero helps

Writing 0.7 as 0.70 is useful when comparing or adding with hundredths, because it puts both numbers in the same unit. This is precisely the common-denominator move from the fraction chapter, done by writing a zero.

Money keeps the zero on purpose

Prices are always written with two decimal places — $4.50, not $4.5 — so that every amount is stated in whole cents. It is a convention for consistency, and it is a good reminder that the trailing zero changes the presentation, not the value.
