A misplaced decimal point makes an answer ten times out, and it is easy to miss.

Round, then add

4.82 + 3.15 is roughly 5 + 3, about 8. An answer of 79.7 is clearly wrong.

Useful benchmarks

Round to the nearest whole one, or to the nearest half, whichever is easier.

Round to whole numbers first

For 12.75 + 3.4, estimate as 13 + 3 = 16. Rounding decimals to the nearest whole number is usually enough to catch the errors that matter, and it is fast enough that you will actually do it.

Decimal errors are magnitude errors

A misplaced decimal point changes an answer by a factor of ten or a hundred. That is exactly the kind of error an estimate detects with certainty. Small slips in the last digit survive the estimate, but they matter far less.

Estimating is often what you actually need

Adding up a shopping basket to see if you have enough money needs a rough total, not an exact one. Rounding each price to the nearest dollar as you go is a genuinely useful life skill, and it is this lesson applied.

Track which way you rounded

If you rounded every price up, your estimate is an overestimate and the real total is lower — which is the safe direction when checking you can afford something. Choosing which way to round on purpose turns an estimate into a guarantee.
