When Multiplying Makes Things Smaller

Until now, multiplying always made numbers bigger. That was true because every factor was at least 1.

The case that breaks it

0.5 × 8 is half of 8, which is 4. The answer is smaller than the 8.

Why it happens

Multiplying by 0.5 means taking half of something, and half of something is less.

The rule that survives

Multiply by more than 1 and it grows. By less than 1 and it shrinks. By exactly 1 and nothing changes.

A rule that has run out

For years, multiplying made things bigger. That was only ever true because you were multiplying by whole numbers greater than one. Multiply by 0.5 and the result halves. The old rule was never a law of multiplication — it was a fact about the numbers you had met.

Three cases, decided by the multiplier

Multiplying by a number greater than 1 makes the result larger. Multiplying by exactly 1 leaves it unchanged. Multiplying by a number between 0 and 1 makes it smaller. You can predict the direction before calculating anything, just by looking at the multiplier.

Division changed as well

Dividing by a number less than 1 makes the result bigger: 6 ÷ 0.5 = 12, because twelve halves fit into six. "Division makes things smaller" has expired for exactly the same reason. Both old rules were about whole numbers, not about the operations.

Use it as a check

Before calculating 8 × 0.25, note that the answer must be smaller than 8. If you get 200, the decimal point went astray. Predicting the direction of the answer is one of the cheapest and most reliable checks available.
