A line plot scale can be marked in halves, quarters, or eighths.
Step 1: Let's Learn
Read it, or press Listen and follow the words.
Adding the measurements
Three beakers at 3/8 litre hold 9/8 litres between them.
Sharing it out again
Pouring all the liquid together and sharing it equally is a total, then a division.
Fractional measurements on a plot
Measuring to the nearest eighth of an inch produces values like 2 3/8 and 3 1/8. The line plot's scale must show every eighth, evenly spaced, so each measurement has a place to sit whether or not anything landed there.
Adding all the measurements
Finding the total length of everything measured means adding a list of fractions — real work for this chapter's skills. Convert everything to the same denominator first, add the numerators, then convert back to a mixed number.
Sharing the total out evenly
A common question asks what each item would measure if the total were shared equally. That is the total divided by the number of items — a fraction divided by a whole number, which is exactly what Chapter 7 covers.
What the shape tells you
A tall stack marks the most common measurement. A wide spread means high variation. A mark far from the others deserves a second look — it may be a genuine outlier or a mismeasurement. Reading the shape is the point of plotting at all.
Step 2: Try It Yourself
Tap and try it out.
6 things were measured in all.
The tallest column is at 3/8, with 3 marks.
Step 3: Watch an Example
One step at a time.
Watch Ana Total the Beakers
Ana has 3 beakers at 3/8 litre each.
- Step 1
She reads each one as 3 eighths.
Step 4: Your Turn
Practice makes it stick.
The Beakers
Problem 1 of 2
4 beakers at 3/8 litre each. How many eighths in all?
The Difference
Problem 2 of 2
The longest is 7/8 and the shortest 2/8. What is the difference, in eighths?
Read and Total
1 of 4
2 beakers at 1/4 litre. How many quarters in all?
2 of 4
How many eighths make three quarters?
3 of 4
3 beakers at 5/8 litre. How many eighths in all?
4 of 4
Difference between 6/8 and 1/8, in eighths?
Step 5: Quick Check
Show what you know.
Question 1 of 2
5 beakers at 2/8 litre. How many eighths in all?
Question 2 of 2
How many eighths make one half?
