Step 1: Let's Learn

Read it, or press Listen and follow the words.

3x + 5 = 20 does two things to x: multiply by 3, then add 5.

Undo them backwards

The addition happened last, so undo it first. Subtract 5 from both sides.

Then undo the multiplication

3x = 15, so divide both sides by 3 to get x = 5.

Check it

3 × 5 + 5 = 20. It fits, so the answer is right.

The general two-step form

Any equation of the form px + q = r is solved by subtracting q and then dividing by p. Recognising the shape means you know both steps before you begin, which is faster and less error-prone than working it out fresh each time.

When p or q is negative

For −2x + 7 = 1, subtract 7 to get −2x = −6, then divide by −2 to get x = 3. Dividing two negatives gives a positive. The method is unchanged; only the sign arithmetic needs care.

When the answer is not whole

3x + 1 = 5 gives x = 4/3. A fractional answer is not a sign of error — most equations have them. Leaving the answer as an exact fraction is usually better than converting to a rounded decimal.

Reading the answer in context

If x is a number of buses, a solution of 4/3 means the model needs rethinking or rounding. Solving gives the mathematical answer; deciding what it means in the situation is a separate and equally necessary step.

Step 2: Try It Yourself

The unknown parts and the known part, inside the total.

Three equal unknown parts and a known part make the total.

Step 3: Watch an Example

One step at a time.

Watch Ana Solve 4x − 7 = 13

Ana works through a two-step equation.

  1. Step 1

The subtraction happened last, so she undoes it first: add 7 to both sides.

Step 4: Your Turn

Practice makes it stick.

The Equation

Problem 1 of 2

2x + 6 = 18. What is x?

The Taxi Again

Problem 2 of 2

A taxi charges £3 plus £2 a mile. A fare of £17 covers how many miles?

Two Steps Back

1 of 4

5x + 2 = 17. What is x?

2 of 4

3x − 4 = 11. What is x?

3 of 4

2x + 9 = 3. What is x?

4 of 4

6x − 5 = 19. What is x?

Step 5: Quick Check

Show what you know.

Question 1 of 1

4x + 3 = 23. What is x?

What You Learned

  • A two-step equation does two things to x.
  • Undo them in reverse order: the last thing done is the first thing undone.
  • Always check by putting the answer back in.
