The y-intercept
Where x = 0. Set x to zero and solve — in y = mx + b it is simply b.
Standard form
Ax + By = C hides the slope but makes both intercepts quick to find.
Two points are enough
Plot both intercepts and join them. That is the fastest hand-drawn graph there is.
Finding both intercepts
Set y = 0 and solve for the x-intercept; set x = 0 and solve for the y-intercept. Each intercept is where the line crosses one axis, and on that axis the other coordinate is zero.
Why standard form suits intercepts
In 3x + 4y = 12, setting y = 0 gives x = 4 immediately and setting x = 0 gives y = 3. No rearranging is needed, which is why standard form is preferred when the intercepts are what you want.
Graphing from two intercepts
Plot both intercepts and draw the line through them. Two points determine a line, and the intercepts are usually the two easiest points to find. This is the fastest way to graph an equation given in standard form.
What intercepts mean in context
For a cost equation, the y-intercept is the fixed cost and the x-intercept is where cost reaches zero — often meaningless in context. Intercepts are worth interpreting, and worth discarding when the interpretation is absurd.
