You need a rule first
Before you sort, decide what you are sorting by. Without a rule, the piles are just piles.
Sorting by colour
All the red ones here. All the blue ones there. Every single thing has to go in one pile or the other.
Nothing gets left out
If something does not fit any pile, your rule was not big enough. Every object needs a home.
Check a pile
Pick up anything from the red pile. Is it red? Do that a few times and you know the sorting worked.
