A pattern does the same thing again and again, in the same order.

The order is the pattern

Red, blue, red, blue is a pattern. Red, blue, blue, red is not, because it did not repeat the same way.

Say it out loud

Red, blue, red, blue. Your ears catch the repeat before your eyes do, so saying it helps you hear what comes next.

That is why patterns are useful

Once you find the repeat, you can say what comes next without being told. You worked it out yourself.

Check by looking back
