Bigger needs two things
Nothing is big on its own. A dog is big next to a mouse and small next to a horse. You are always comparing.
Line up the bottoms
Start both from the same place. Otherwise you are measuring where you put them, not how tall they are.
What an unfair comparison looks like
Stand a short thing on a box and it looks taller. Nothing about it changed. Only the starting place did.

Bigger, smaller, taller, shorter, longer. Each one asks you to hold two things in mind at once.
