They come in opposite pairs
On top and underneath. In front and behind. If the cup is on the book, the book is under the cup.
They depend on where you stand
Behind the chair means something different if you walk round to the other side. Position words need a point of view.
Use two together
Under the table, next to the chair. Two position words narrow it down much faster than one.
