About Cogito
Cogito teaches school subjects through short, highly visual, hands-on lessons. A child should be able to finish one on their own and then explain the idea to somebody else. That — not a score — is what we count as it having worked.
What we are trying to protect
Three commitments shape every decision in the app. A change that breaks any one of them is the wrong change, however good it looks.
Workbook clarity, digitally alive
The structured, uncluttered rigour of an excellent workbook — but every figure is a working manipulative the child can touch and change. Calm and serious about teaching, not a cartoon world wrapped around drills.
Manipulative-first teaching
Every concept is taught through something the child can handle before any symbol appears: ten-frames, number bonds, part-part-whole, base-ten blocks, number lines. The interaction is the explanation, never decoration on top of one.
A complete, coherent curriculum
A full standards-aligned year in real teaching order. A family can start at Chapter 1, Lesson 1 and go straight through with no gaps, rather than navigating a sprawling skill list.
Who it is for
Primarily a child working on a tablet at home, often alone, and often still learning to read. That single fact drives a great deal: instructions are short, almost nothing needs typing, touch targets are large, and a lesson is built to fit a ten to twenty minute sitting.
Alongside them, a parent who wants to see what is being learned and where to help without having to run the session — and a homeschooling parent who needs the whole year visible in teaching order.
How a lesson works
Every lesson follows the same shape, so a child never has to work out what kind of page they are on.
- Teach the idea in short, plain sentences.
- Show it as something the child can touch and change.
- Work an example one step at a time.
- Practise on problems in a familiar setting.
- Check understanding, with the answer explained either way.
Chapter checks are optional. A child who finds one chapter hard can still read the next; a check is there when you want to know how it is going, not as a toll gate.
Where it is now
1,727 written lessons across 3 subjects, from Pre-K through to named high school courses. Everything works offline once the app has been opened, and it can be installed to a home screen like any other app.
