The idea this lesson is working on — Children tend to think a moving thing turns or stops of its own accord. In the book the ball changes direction only when a hand or a foot pushes it, and when nobody touches it, it keeps going straight. Ask: what made it change which way it went?
Steering is a sideways push — Turning the handlebars on a bike makes the front wheel push the bike sideways a little. A boat rudder does the same in water. Any change of direction needs a push or a pull.
