The idea this lesson is working on — Children describe a thing by naming it: a cup, a coat, a window. In the book two cups are the same object and different materials, and only squeezing them and looking through them tells them apart. Ask: what is it made of, and what is that like? Then: how could you check?
Two questions about any object — Pick up anything and ask what it is for and what it is made of. A spoon can be metal, wood or plastic and it is still a spoon. This chapter is about the second question.
A property is something you can check — Squeeze it, bend it, look through it, drip water on it. A property is something your child can find out for themselves rather than something they have to be told.
