How many pairs there should be
For 8 there are nine pairs, from 0 and 8 up to 8 and 0. One more than the number itself, because zero counts as a part.
The middle pair is the double
4 and 4 makes 8. Every even number has a middle pair like that. Odd numbers do not, which is what makes them odd.
