Sometimes you can see how many without counting at all. You just know.

Only small numbers

One, two and three are easy to see. Four is usually fine. After that most people have to count.

Dice help

Dots on dice always sit in the same places. Your eyes learn the picture, so you stop counting them.

The picture is what you learn

Five dots on a dice make a shape with one in the middle. You know it is five because of the shape.

Counting still works

If you are not sure, count. Seeing it quickly is a shortcut, not a rule you have to follow.
