Six is not the name of the last toy. Six is how big the pile is. It belongs to all of them together.
Count again the other way
Start at the other end and count again. You still get the same number.
Why it comes out the same
The toys did not change. Only your finger went a different way. How many there are cannot depend on where you started.
That is how you check
Two counts, two different directions, same answer. Now you can be sure.
