More than one child

1. Sign in, then tap your name at the top right of the blue bar.
2. Tap Add or edit learners. On a tablet or laptop there is also a Learners link in the bar itself.
3. Under Add a learner, type their First name. The Grade is optional; leave it on Not saying if you prefer. The grade is only a starting suggestion — they can do any lesson from any grade.
4. Tap Add learner. Repeat for each child.

Straight after you add a child, a card appears: Find where Ravi should start, with the child’s own name. It offers a short test in math and reading that suggests the course and chapter to begin with. It takes about ten to twenty minutes, your child answers, and nothing is marked.

1. Tap Start the test to take it now, with that child’s name already chosen.
2. Or tap Later. The link Find where to start stays at the foot of the learners page, and on the family page.

Once a child has taken it, the family page shows the last suggestion under their name, as Where to start, suggested, with a link to that chapter. It is kept on the device the test was taken on. Finding where to start explains the test.

Under each child’s name on the learners page there is a box, Show levels instead of grades. Tick it and that child sees Level C Math where you see Grade 1 Math, on this device only. You keep grades on the learners page, on the family page and on worksheets. See Grades and levels.

Each child also has their own switch for lesson hints, on your account page under Hints for kids. See Asking about a lesson.

Once there are children on the account, your name at the top right shows who is learning as well: Priya · Ravi means you are signed in and Ravi’s work is being saved. On a phone it shows only the child’s name. Tap it, and with two or more children the menu starts with Who is learning? and a button for each name. Choose one before your child starts.

It is in the bar on every page, not only the home page, so you can check whose name a lesson is being saved under while the lesson is open.

Choosing a name is open on purpose — a five-year-old has to be able to pick themselves. What is not open, if you do not want it to be, is the page that shows everybody’s marks at once.

1. Sign in, tap your name at the top right, then Set a code in the menu.
2. That opens Grown-ups only on your account page. Tap Set a code.
3. Choose four digits your children do not know, and save.

From then on, on that device, Family progress, the weekly letter and the Learners page ask for the code. It is asked once and then not again until the browser is closed. Lessons, the name buttons and each child’s own Today panel are untouched.

Underneath the code you will find Also ask for the code before, with two boxes. Both start unticked.

1. Changing who is learning — the name buttons still show, but the code is asked before the name changes. Worth ticking if one child has been opening another child’s name: the home page shows whichever child is chosen and the lesson they are part-way through. The code is asked every time a name is changed, not once per visit. Leave it unticked if a young child needs to start their own work without waiting for you.
2. Fun & Think — the games ask for the code. Nothing to do with privacy; it is there for families who want lessons done before play.

Up to four children, Family progress shows everybody at once with a row of names to look at one at a time. From five, it opens as a register instead — one line per child with when they last worked, how many lessons this week, and where they are — and tapping a name opens that child in full. Nothing to set up; it changes shape on its own.

The account is the same wherever you sign in. A child can do a lesson on the family tablet in the morning and carry on from a laptop in the evening, as long as the same account is signed in and the right name is selected.

On the same learners page, Edit beside a child lets you change their name or grade, then Save. Remove asks once more, as Remove Ravi? with their name, before it acts. Removing a child removes their progress record too, so do it only when you mean it.
